So you’re going out on your first date? And what could be worse than those uncomfortable moments of long silence? It would be a blunder to begin your first date by discussing politics or religion! Among the best topics to discuss on a first date is “movies,” which is often a good topic with which to break the ice. It could lay the foundation for the conversation running smoothly through the evening. While movies form an interesting and easy subject to discuss for most, the movie you select could be of great consequence to how the evening turns out. So, how does one pick a movie to discuss? There are some elements that one must bear in mind in selecting the movie to discuss and these can best be explained with an example… Revolutionary Road.

Let’s begin with a short review of Revolutionary Road for those who haven’t seen it. The movie is basically about an unhappy couple who move to the suburbs with their two kids. Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) is trapped in a meaningless job and feels like a wasted intellectual. April (Kate Winslet) is a housewife who is depressed about her crushed dream of becoming an actress. Through the movie their relationship deteriorates and there are endless squabbles and accusations.

And now for our discussion on why not to discuss Revolutionary Road on your first date:

Happy Thoughts – This is your first date and the best topics to discuss are things that make you smile and feel cheerful. Revolutionary Road is way too depressing. Talk about movies that excite you or make you laugh. You could try something like The Dark Knight or Million Dollar Baby or even classics like The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady.

Relationships - Revolutionary Road is about a relationship turning sour. That certainly does not form the perfect backdrop for your first date. Since this holds the potential of developing into a great relationship, you’d do better talking about movies like Sideways or Lost in Translation.Hope – Being hopeful is the very essence of a first date. It’s the basis of building a happy and lasting relationship. Discussing a movie like A Beautiful Mind would do much better than Revolutionary Road.

It’s important to ensure that your first date is full of smiles, hope and cheer. Talk about memorable moments, which may be a good starting point for planning the next date. And if you’re really keen on discussing a Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio movie on your first date, make sure it’s Titanic.
